The only difference that I can tell is that the new battery is listed with a higher mAh (5200 versus 4400). This is the battery I purchased: Asus A42-U53 Battery 75Wh, 5200mAh (Extended Capacity) from Powerwarehouse through Amazon. The battery seems fine. Installed and charged, it gave me about 5 hours of battery time. When I plugged the notebook back into AC power, the battery recharged to 100%. The next day, I noticed an orange light flashing on the front of the unit. I recognized it as the power light, but had never noticed it flashing before.

When I placed the mouse cursor over the battery icon, it read '98% available, plugged in, not charging'. I powered down the unit, and then powered it back up. I then powered it down, removed the battery, then reinserted the battery. Upon powering the notebook back up, the icon now showed the message '76% available, plugged in, charging', just as it normally would after usage on battery power. The next morning, I used the notebook on battery power for a short time (10 minutes or so).

I later noticed that again, the orange light was flashing and the message was the same as the day before. I went through the same procedure, removing and replacing the battery, with the same result as before, except that now the message read '97% available, plugged in, charging'. (This only seems to happen when I've had the notebook on battery power for a very short time, compared to hours.) It's as if the battery must be removed to trigger the charging. The following day, I used the notebook on battery power for most of the day. When it reached 10% remaining power, I plugged it in to AC power. The battery charged normally. Yesterday I once again removed it from AC power twice, each time for just a few minutes.

The battery icon showed 96% power. Later in the day, I noticed the orange light flashing again. I removed it from AC power and used it on battery until it powered down (my critical stage is set at 5%). When I plugged it back into AC power, the light was still flashing.

I powered it down, removed and replaced the battery, and everything was fine. I'm new to the forum and I saw an older thread on recalibrating. Is that what I need to do? If so, can you tell me exactly how? Do I set the critical stage to a lower level and simply let the battery run down? Or do I do it through the BIOS? Is it possible I recalibrated it yesterday by letting it run the battery down to 5%?
